An interest in making music can begin before buying an instrument. Brooklyn Public Library's Musical Instrument Lending Library lets eligible adult patrons borrow selected instruments for three weeks, offering a practical way to make room for regular practice.
The current program page lists eligibility for cardholders eighteen and older with a current BPL account and less than fifteen dollars in billed charges. Request an instrument through the catalog and wait for the pickup email. Availability depends on the collection and other borrowers, so a listing is not a promise of immediate checkout.

Instrument transactions take place at Central Library's second-floor Art and Music reference desk, 10 Grand Army Plaza, Monday–Saturday. The program does not handle checkouts or returns on Sundays, and transactions stop fifteen minutes before closing. The cardholder must collect the instrument personally. Confirm current arrangements before travelling with a large item.
Give the loan a manageable goal, such as learning a short passage or exploring an unfamiliar sound. Make a place to store the instrument safely and plan the return as carefully as the pickup. Three weeks can be enough to discover whether the habit of practice is something you want to continue.
