New York's Urban Park Rangers make the city a place to keep learning outdoors
Free ranger programs range from history and hiking to astronomy, with each listing setting its own participation details.

A city park can be a place to learn something you did not know how to look for. NYC's Urban Park Rangers lead programs connecting residents with local ecology, outdoor recreation and the history of the places around them.
NYC Parks lists all Urban Park Ranger events as free. The program's subjects include hiking, astronomy, art and nature, fishing, and other outdoor activities. That range makes it possible to choose an outing by curiosity rather than by how much equipment or experience you already have.
Use the current ranger calendar to choose a specific program and read its meeting point, age guidance and registration requirements. An activity category on the main page does not mean the activity runs at every park or every weekend. NYC Parks also notes that weather and other conditions can lead to modifications, rescheduling or cancellation.
Bring a question about the place you are visiting and enough time to stay with the group. The interesting discovery might be a feature you have passed many times without noticing it. A ranger-led visit can give an ordinary route a new layer of meaning, and a reason to return later to see what has changed.
